Serefname - Dîroka Kurdistanê

Şerefxanê Bedlîsî wrote his monumental work “Şerefname” in two volumes. The present book is the first volume, focusing on the history of Kurdistan, its Kurdish princes, rulers, and the sociopolitical structure of the region. He completed it on August 13, 1597.
The original manuscript, handwritten by Şerefxan himself in Persian, consists of 246 pages and is currently preserved at the Bodleian Library of Oxford University. The book also includes 20 historical and artistic illustrations drawn by the author himself, each depicting and explaining significant historical, literary, or cultural events.

The first volume, titled “The History of Kurdistan / Şerefname”, opens with a preface, followed by four main chapters and concludes with a section in which Şerefxanê Bedlîsî recounts his own life. It provides a comprehensive account of Kurdish principalities, their relations, customs and traditions, social organization, ancient institutions, and historical sites of Kurdistan.

At the beginning, it presents important information about the origins of the Kurds and their way of life. Each page and section is clearly structured.
According to Mîr Şerefxan himself:

The first chapter discusses the Kurdish rulers who raised the flag of independence, sovereignty, and nobility, and whose names were recorded in the annals of sultans.

The second chapter describes the journeys and reigns of major Kurdish princes, who, though not entirely independent, maintained a notable degree of freedom — some even minted coins and had Friday sermons delivered in their own names.

The third chapter examines other princes and governors of Kurdistan.

The fourth chapter focuses on the rulers and beys of Bitlis, the ancestors of Şerefxanê Bedlîsî.

This historical, cultural, and literary masterpiece holds great significance for the study of Kurdistan, the understanding of Kurdish dynasties, and the preservation of Kurdish language, art, and history.
