Description

The classics of Kurdish literature

From the time of Ehmedê Xani until the beginning of the 20th century, the written language of Kurdish had changed little. The Latin alphabet was not yet widespread, and every Kurd could at least read and understand parts of Mem û Zîn . However, after the cultural movement, the Kurds gradually distanced themselves from their classics, and their literary heritage gradually fell into oblivion. However, with the further development of the Kurdish language and the emergence of a clearer written language in Kurmanji, access to the classic works became more difficult. The poetic beauty, expressiveness, and mastery of the authors contained in these works remained, but became increasingly inaccessible to readers.

Mem û Zîn : The crown jewel of Kurdish literature

Mem û Zîn is one of those texts that is no longer easily understandable for today's readers. Therefore, a new commentary and explanation of this work became necessary. This work is intended to make Mem û Zîn more accessible again and keep Xanî's ideas and wisdom alive. We hope that this presentation will build a strong bridge between today's readers and Ehmedê Xanî and his work.

Ehmedê Xanî and the literary legacy

The classic works of a language are an expression of its dignity and prestige. Every literature and every language—depending on the possibilities and creative power of its authors—produces great works that are also considered masterpieces of humanity. The immortal work Mem û Zîn by Ehmedê Xanî is one of these classic works and the crown jewel of Kurdish literature. For over three centuries, it has occupied a central place in Kurdish literature. The love story of Mem and Zîn is presented in Xanî's poetry with the highest aesthetic and technical perfection and has become the primary source of Kurdish poetry and language—an inexhaustible treasure for all lovers of poetry.
