  • Description

In the term "Dengbêj", "deng" not only stands for voice or sound, but also for melody, tone, rhythm, and the special musical expressiveness of Kurdish narrative art. At the same time, "deng" refers to stories and events that resonate in society – narratives of love, war, loss, and life itself, carried from village to village and etched into people's memories.

"Bêj", on the other hand, means to tell, to pronounce, to express. It is the word itself – complete, powerful, and poetic. In Dengbêj art, "bêj" is the soul of the Kilam, the way a story is shaped, carried, and brought to life. Only through telling does the depth of a Kilam unfold. In this sense, Dengbêjî is simultaneously music, narration, and poetry.

It is with this very original meaning of Dengbêj art that Dengbêj Reso occupies a special place. In voice, performance, and musical expressiveness, he is considered unique among Dengbêj*innen. He liberated many Kilam from their purely regional forms and gave them a broader, more general expressiveness. In his hands, the Kilam began to dance, unfold, and take on new colors.

Through Reso's voice, the Kilam gained a new form; through his melodies, they became deeper and more penetrating. His manner of presentation gave them clarity, subtlety, and a special beauty that still resonates today.
